Straight-line fixed-asset depreciation in a single Python script (standard library only, no installs). Give it a CSV of assets — asset ID, name, category, purchase date, cost, salvage value, useful life in years — and it reports annual and monthly depreciation, months in service, accumulated depreciation, and book value per asset and per category, in a readable report and a summary CSV. Choose the as-of date with --as-of YYYY-MM-DD (a built-in default applies without the flag); the report header shows the date actually used. Months in service are whole calendar months, capped at the useful life, and accumulated depreciation is capped at the depreciable base (cost minus salvage value). Duplicate rows, invalid numbers or dates, negative costs, salvage values below zero or above cost, and non-positive useful lives are ignored with a warning for each — nothing is guessed or filled in. Includes a fictional sample file (10 rows, 6 kept) and its verified sample outputs, plus tests that assert the sample totals. The script reports book values only; it does not compute taxes, deductions, or tax filings. Check results against your own accounting rules before relying on them. No outcome is promised.
